Augmentatives

Hola!

Previously we have studied the diminutives and what are they used for in Spanish.

In this lesson we are going to study the opposite, the augmentatives and what are they used for.

Commonly, augmentatives are formed using these suffixes:
-ón (ona), -azo (aza), -ote (ota)

  • The most common use of an augmentative is to indicate that something is large, strong or powerful:
Que perrazo!
(WHAT A BIG DOG)

  • To indicate intensity of a noun or an action:
Necesito un favorzote
(I need a big favour)

  • It's also used to indicate a blow or strike:
Un martillazo
(A blow with a hammer)
