Preguntar en español

Hola amigos!

Today we are going to study how to make questions in the simple tense in Spanish.

This subject is pretty easy because there is not only one single structure you can use.

Let's take the following example

Susie trabaja en un restaurante de lunes a viernes
(Susie works in a restaurant from monday to friday)

To ask a question in the present tense you can take the sentence in the same order and just change the intonation to make it sound like a question:

Susie trabaja en un restaurante de lunes a viernes?
(Does Susie work in a restaurant from monday to friday?)

You can also change the verb to the beginning of the sentence

Trabaja Susie en un restaurante de lunes a viernes?
(Does Susie work in a restaurant from monday to friday?)

Preguntas interrogativas y acentos

Preguntas Interrogativas y Acentos

Hola amig@s.  Hoy aprenderemos un poco más acerca de las preguntas interrogativas y sus acentos.

Hi folks.  Today we are going to learn a little bit more about the interrogative questions in Spanish and their Accents.

Some people, even if they are spanish speakers ignore putting the accents to the interrogative questions.  I hope this won't be your case, so to make your spanish even more perfect than how it is right now, just read carefully this lesson.

Que and Qué

The Interrogative question in Spanish is Qué (What) while "que" without an accent means "That"

Qué quieres?
(What do you want?)

Quiero que me ames
(I want that you love me)

Donde and Dónde

compañias seguros medicos
The explanation here it's a little bit more complex.  Both Dónde and Donde means Where.  However you use Dónde, with an accent to make questions while Donde is an adverb of place

Dónde está la hija de Petro?
(Where is Pedro's daughter?)

La casa donde vivía era muy grande
(The house where I live was very big)

Cuando and Cuándo

Same happens with Cuando en Cuándo.  Both spanish words mean When.  In this case you use Cuándo when you are asking a question but cuando when you are making an statement

Cuándo es el juego?
(When is the match?)

Cuando Amy canta hace feliz a todos
(When Amy sings, she makes everybody glad)
Por qué and Porque
Por qué and Porque meaning Why and Because sound very similar when you are speaking spanish.  The question Por qué, as you have seen are two different words and it has accent while Porque (Because) is just one.
Por qué estás solo?
(Why are you lonely)
Porque mis amigos están ocupados este fin de semana
(Because my friends are very busy this weekend)
Como and Cómo

The Interrogative question in Spanish is Cómo (How,as) while "como" without an accent means "como"
Cómo estuvo tu día?
(How was your day?)
Como siempre.  Tuve mucho trabajo
(Same as usual.  I had a lot of work)

Cuál and Cual

Cuál and Cual both means which/what/whom in spanish.  You use cuál with an accent to make interrogative questions while cual, without an accent is an interrogative pronoun:

Cuál es tu color favorito?
(What's your favourite color)

La persona por la cual preguntas está de vacaciones
(The person whom you are asking is on vacations)

Adverbios de Frecuencia

Hola amig@s

Qué tal si practicamos un poco nuestro vocabulario en Español.

These are the adverbs of frequency in Spanish

Los adverbios de frecuencia sirven para informarte de la frecuencia con que se produce una acción.
---
Adverbs of frequency are used to inform you about how frequent an action is being made:

Siempre- Always
A veces- Sometimes
Frecuentemente- Often/ Frequently
Usualmente- Usually
Raramente- Rarely
Rara Vez- Seldom
Casi nunca- Hardly Ever
Nunca- Never

In Spanish you can use the adverbs of frequency in almost every place of the sentence.  You put the emphasis.

Let's see this example:

I never talk to her

Yo nunca hablo con ella
Nunca yo hablo ella
Yo hablo con ella nunca

Do you see how it's easy.  You just need to know the adverbs of frequency and start trying to create your own sentences.

Buena suerte.

Hasta nuestra próxima lección

The Verb Ser and Estar

Hola a todos

Bienvenido a tu nueva clase de español

Today we are going to study two verbs: Ser and Estar.  They both mean To Be but they are used in different cases.

The Verb "Ser"

You use Ser to create sentences that can be asked using Who.

For example:

I am a doctor, in Spanish = Yo soy un doctor.
She is Sandra= Ella es Sandra.

Ser

Spanish
English
Yo Soy
I Am
Tú Eres
You Are
Él/ Ella Es
He/ She Is
Nosotros Somos
We Are
Ustedes Son
You (pl) Are
Vosotros Sois
You (pl- Spain) Are
Ellos/ Ellas Son
They Are

Now the verb Estar.  This also means To Be but is used only when you are making sentences in present continuous tense (ing), for example "Estoy comiendo" (I am eating) and to create sentences that can be asked using Where

Luisa está en el parque= Luisa está en el parque
Ellos están en San Francisco= They are in San Francisco

Estar

Spanish
English
Yo Estoy
I Am
Tú Estás
You Are
Él/ Ella Está
He/ She Is
Nosotros Estamos
We Are
Ustedes Están
You (pl) Are
Vosotros Estáis
You (pl- Spain) Are
Ellos/ Ellas Están
They Are

Now you see.  In Spanish we have to verbs both meaning to be but each one has a different meaning.  Ser, to express who you are and Estar to express where are you or what are you doing.

You just need to understand this short explanation to start using both verbs.  Good luck

Nos vemos en tu próxima clase.

Quiubo/ Quihubo (exclamation)

Debes Saber

  • and Usted both mean "You" on it's singular form.  However, you use  for an informal speech, basically when you are talking to a close friend, a family member or to your partner.  Usted is used for a more formal or professional speech.  You can't call your boss "Tú", for example.
  • Vosotros means You on it's plural form.  We only use Vosotros in Spain while in the rest of the countries we seldom use it.  For the rest of the countries use Ustedes for the plural form of You.

Eso es todo por ahora amigos!

Keep practicing your Spanish.  Adiós.

Niño or Boy?

Hi.  Let's start working with your Spanish vocabulary.  Today: Niño or Boy

Some people translate Niño as Boy however...

En Español usamos Niño (or chavo in Mexico, chaval in Spain) para un rango menor de edad que en inglés:

Let's see:

Niño: 0-10 years old maximum

The female equivalent for Niño is Niña (or chava in Mexico) so it's not exactly like boy in english.

En inglés puedes llamar a alguien boy con 14 o 15 años pero no es lo mismo en español.

Y para terminar nuestra primera lección en español,let's watch a video of a 'niño' who is not yet a man xD  Manboy by Eric Saade
