Preguntas interrogativas y acentos

Preguntas Interrogativas y Acentos

Hola amig@s.  Hoy aprenderemos un poco más acerca de las preguntas interrogativas y sus acentos.

Hi folks.  Today we are going to learn a little bit more about the interrogative questions in Spanish and their Accents.

Some people, even if they are spanish speakers ignore putting the accents to the interrogative questions.  I hope this won't be your case, so to make your spanish even more perfect than how it is right now, just read carefully this lesson.

Que and Qué

The Interrogative question in Spanish is Qué (What) while "que" without an accent means "That"

Qué quieres?
(What do you want?)

Quiero que me ames
(I want that you love me)

Donde and Dónde

The explanation here it's a little bit more complex.  Both Dónde and Donde means Where.  However you use Dónde, with an accent to make questions while Donde is an adverb of place

Dónde está la hija de Petro?
(Where is Pedro's daughter?)

La casa donde vivía era muy grande
(The house where I live was very big)

Cuando and Cuándo

Same happens with Cuando en Cuándo.  Both spanish words mean When.  In this case you use Cuándo when you are asking a question but cuando when you are making an statement

Cuándo es el juego?
(When is the match?)

Cuando Amy canta hace feliz a todos
(When Amy sings, she makes everybody glad)
Por qué and Porque
Por qué and Porque meaning Why and Because sound very similar when you are speaking spanish.  The question Por qué, as you have seen are two different words and it has accent while Porque (Because) is just one.
Por qué estás solo?
(Why are you lonely)
Porque mis amigos están ocupados este fin de semana
(Because my friends are very busy this weekend)
Como and Cómo

The Interrogative question in Spanish is Cómo (How,as) while "como" without an accent means "como"
Cómo estuvo tu día?
(How was your day?)
Como siempre.  Tuve mucho trabajo
(Same as usual.  I had a lot of work)

Cuál and Cual

Cuál and Cual both means which/what/whom in spanish.  You use cuál with an accent to make interrogative questions while cual, without an accent is an interrogative pronoun:

Cuál es tu color favorito?
(What's your favourite color)

La persona por la cual preguntas está de vacaciones
(The person whom you are asking is on vacations)
