Recognizing Cognates Pt. II

Hola a todos!

One more time we are going to continue studying Cognates and how they work in Spanish.  Last lesson we study what cognates in general are and I gave you an example of a Spanish Cognate.

Now let’s continue:
In the case of some Spanish cognates, it's easy to see what they could mean in English. For example, if you encounter the word cliente, you'll likely be able to guess that it's a cognate of "client." Likewise, imposible looks very much like "impossible," though it's pronounced slightly differently (the "e" isn't silent, and the accent is on the "si" syllable).
Nevertheless, other cognate pairs aren't as obvious and you'll need to practice guessing to be able to figure out the correct meaning. For example, it may not be immediately clear that traducción is the Spanish cognate of ''translation" or that estudiar is a cognate for ''to study."

I recommend you to start elaborating a list of words in Spanish that are similar in English or in your mother tongue.
Have fun.

Hasta pronto :)

Recognizing Cognates Pt. I

Hola a todos!

Today we are going to start practising Spanish cognates.  If you learn some Spanish cognates, this will help you to improve your vocabulary.

First of all, let's remember what's a cognate in Grammar:

Cognates, in every language, are words that look alike or have a very similar meaning to your mother language (in our case, English)

Let's see an example:

ATENCIÓN- ATTENTION

SATISFACCIÓN- SATISFACTION

EXTERIOR- EXTERIOR

As you can see, these two words have a similar spelling and at the same time, they share a same meaning.

Augmentatives

Hola!

Previously we have studied the diminutives and what are they used for in Spanish.

In this lesson we are going to study the opposite, the augmentatives and what are they used for.

Commonly, augmentatives are formed using these suffixes:
-ón (ona), -azo (aza), -ote (ota)

  • The most common use of an augmentative is to indicate that something is large, strong or powerful:
Que perrazo!
(WHAT A BIG DOG)

  • To indicate intensity of a noun or an action:
Necesito un favorzote
(I need a big favour)

  • It's also used to indicate a blow or strike:
Un martillazo
(A blow with a hammer)

Nth numbers (Part I)

Hola!

Today we are going to start the nth numbers.  In Grammar we call these numbers as the ordinal numbers.

We have already studied the cardinal numbers (one, two, three) that are regularly use for counting or as adjectives both in Spanish and English:

ONE BOOK
(UN LIBRO)

            THREE HOUSES
(TRES CASAS)

There’s also another group of numbers known as the ordinal numbers.
Ordinal numbers are used to indicate the order of something: first, second, third, etc.

In English you just have to add a th to the ordinal numbers after the second and that’s it.  In Spanish, the rule it’s slightly more complicated and you’ll have to memorize the first ten.

That’s what we are going to do today:

SPANISH
ENGLISH
PRIMERO
FIRST
SEGUNDO
SECOND
TERCERO
THIRD
CUARTO
FORTH
QUINTO
FIFTH
SEXTO
SIXTH
SEPTIMO
SEVENTH
OCTAVO
EIGHTH
NOVENO
NINTH
DÉCIMO
TENTH
